Fans spin up, RGB lights, maybe the logo flashes — then it dies and starts over. And over. A boot-looping gaming PC is maddening precisely because it almost works, and because gaming rigs have more going on than office machines: higher power draw, XMP memory profiles, big graphics cards, and often an overclock or a recent parts swap in the mix.
We build and repair gaming PCs at our Haddonfield shop, and boot loops are a regular visitor to the bench. Here's the diagnosis order that finds the culprit fastest, from most common to least.

1 Read the Loop: Where Does It Die?
Watch a full cycle carefully — the moment of death tells you which suspect list you're on:
- Dies within 1–5 seconds, before anything on screen: hardware — power delivery, RAM training, or a short. Sections 3–5.
- Reaches the motherboard splash screen, then restarts: firmware/settings territory — failed XMP or overclock, a half-applied BIOS update, or a drive it can't hand off to. Sections 3–4.
- Reaches the Windows logo or spinner, then restarts: software — a bad driver, a broken update, or a corrupted system file. Section 6.
- No video at all, but it stays on: that's not a boot loop — check your motherboard's debug LEDs (most gaming boards have four labeled CPU/DRAM/VGA/BOOT; the one that stays lit names the failing stage) or listen for beep codes.
2 What Changed Right Before This?
Boot loops rarely come from nowhere. Before touching anything, think back over the last session:
- Installed new RAM, GPU, or an M.2 drive? Reseat it. New-part boot loops are overwhelmingly seating, compatibility, or a power cable that didn't click.
- Enabled XMP/EXPO, overclocked, or undervolted? That's your answer — go to section 3.
- Updated the BIOS? An interrupted or mismatched BIOS update loops exactly like this; many boards can recover via BIOS flashback.
- Windows update or new GPU driver last night? Skip to section 6.
- Nothing at all? Then suspect aging hardware — usually the power supply or degrading RAM stability — and keep reading.
3 Clear CMOS: The Ten-Minute Fix
Clearing the motherboard's settings memory (CMOS) resets every BIOS setting — XMP, overclocks, boot order, fan curves — back to safe defaults. It is the single highest-percentage boot loop fix, and it's easy:
- Power off and unplug the PC.
- Use the Clear CMOS button or jumper (check your board manual — many gaming boards have a button on the rear panel), or remove the coin battery for a few minutes and reinstall it.
- Plug in and boot. If it starts, the loop was a settings problem — usually an unstable memory or CPU profile.
If the machine now runs at defaults, re-enable settings one at a time (XMP first) and see what brings the loop back. If XMP does, you're in the next section.
4 RAM and XMP: The #1 Hardware Culprit
Memory is the most common hardware cause of gaming PC boot loops. XMP/EXPO profiles run RAM at speeds the memory controller has to train at every boot — and marginal stability that was fine last summer can start failing as parts age, temperatures change, or a BIOS update alters training behavior.
- Try one stick at a time, in the slot the manual designates (usually the second from the CPU). If one stick loops and the other doesn't, you've found a bad module.
- Reseat firmly. Both clips must snap. A stick that's 95% seated will loop forever.
- Run at default speed. If the machine is stable with XMP off, the kit can't hold its rated profile on your board — try the profile one speed grade down, or update the BIOS, which frequently improves memory compatibility.
- Long boots with a lit DRAM LED after a RAM change can be normal — first-boot memory training on modern DDR5 systems can take several minutes and look exactly like a hang. Give a brand-new configuration five patient minutes before intervening.
5 Power Supply and GPU Checks
Gaming PCs punish power supplies. Modern graphics cards draw hard, spiky loads, and a PSU that's aging — or was barely adequate on build day — can boot-loop as its protection circuits trip during the power-up surge. Suspect the PSU when the loop is fast (dead within seconds), when the machine also crashed under gaming load before the loop started, or when the PSU is 5+ years old or a no-name budget unit.
- Reseat both ends of the GPU power cables — including the modular connections at the PSU side, which everyone forgets.
- Avoid daisy-chaining one cable to a high-power GPU's dual connectors; use two separate runs. On 12VHPWR/12V-2x6 connectors, verify the plug is fully, completely seated.
- Test with the graphics card removed (using onboard video) — if the loop stops, it's the GPU or the power feeding it.
- Swapping in a known-good PSU is the definitive test, which is exactly what we do on the bench.
6 Windows Boot Loops (You Can See the Logo)
If the machine reliably reaches the Windows logo before restarting, the hardware is likely fine and the OS is tripping over itself — commonly a GPU driver, a bad update, or corrupted system files. After two or three failed boots Windows should offer Automatic Repair; from its Advanced Options:
- Boot into Safe Mode. If Safe Mode works, uninstall the most recent GPU driver or Windows update, then reboot normally.
- Use System Restore to roll back to before the loop began, if a restore point exists.
- Uninstall updates directly from the recovery menu if a patch started the loop — the same post-update problems we cover in our Windows 11 update guide can escalate to loops on gaming rigs with third-party drivers.
- Don't reach for "Reset this PC" as a first resort — it's the nuclear option, and done wrong it takes your files with it. If recovery options aren't sticking, that's the moment to stop and get help rather than gamble the drive's contents.
