Slow WiFi? Dead spots? Smart home devices keep dropping? Your home network is probably the issue. After setting up hundreds of South Jersey home networks, here's our exact checklist โ from picking the right equipment to debugging dead spots.
1 Step 1: Understand Your Internet Speed
Before buying any equipment, know what you're paying for. Go to fast.com on your phone. Note the speed.
- Under 100 Mbps: basic single-router setup is fine โ modest router budget.
- 100-500 Mbps: WiFi 6 router required โ mid-range budget.
- 500+ Mbps: WiFi 6E or WiFi 7 โ premium budget. Mesh recommended for large homes.
Comcast, Verizon FiOS, and TCC (Lightpath) are the main South Jersey providers. Most homes get 100-300 Mbps. If you're paying for 1 Gbps but your speeds are slow, your router is the bottleneck.
2 Step 2: Replace the ISP's Router
The router your cable or fiber provider gave you is typically the cheapest option that meets minimum specs. Replacing it with a good router will dramatically improve your speed.
Our recommendations:
- Budget tier: TP-Link AX1800 or Asus RT-AX55 โ WiFi 6, decent coverage
- Mid-tier: Asus RT-AX86U or TP-Link Archer AX73 โ strong signal, gigabit+ ready
- Premium tier: Asus RT-BE96U or Netgear Nighthawk RAXE500 โ WiFi 7, best for large homes
3 Step 3: Mesh vs Single Router
Single router is enough if:
- Your home is under 1,500 sq ft
- One floor or simple layout
- Router can be placed centrally
You need mesh if:
- Home over 2,000 sq ft
- Multiple floors
- Thick walls (brick, plaster)
- WiFi dead spots in certain rooms
Best mesh systems: Eero Pro 6E, Asus ZenWiFi XT8, TP-Link Deco BE85. Sold as multi-packs covering large homes.
4 Step 4: Optimal Router Placement
Router placement matters more than people realize. Best practices:
- Central location โ not in a corner of your home
- Elevated โ on a shelf, not the floor
- Away from large metal objects (refrigerator, filing cabinet)
- Away from microwaves and baby monitors โ 2.4GHz interference
- Open shelf, not inside a closet/cabinet โ signal absorbed by walls
5 Step 5: Secure Your Network
Security basics:
- Change the default admin password โ first thing after setup
- Use WPA3 encryption (or WPA2 if WPA3 not supported)
- Create a strong WiFi password โ 16+ characters, mix of types
- Enable guest network for visitors (keeps them off your main network)
- Disable WPS (a known security vulnerability)
- Update router firmware regularly (most routers auto-update now)
6 Step 6: Smart Home Device Considerations
If you have Ring cameras, Nest thermostat, Alexa/Google Home, smart bulbs:
- Most smart home devices use 2.4GHz (slower but better range)
- Some routers default to combined 2.4/5 GHz โ split them for smart home compatibility
- Matter and Thread (newer protocols) work better than older Zigbee/Z-Wave
- For HomeKit users: Apple TV or HomePod becomes the hub
