What to Expect When You Bring Your Computer to a Repair Shop

If you've never brought your computer to a repair shop before, the whole process might feel a little mysterious. What actually happens after you hand it over? How long will it take? What does it cost? Will they try to sell you stuff you don't need?

As a computer repair shop that's been serving South Jersey since 2004, we want to pull back the curtain and walk you through exactly what to expect. Spoiler alert: it's a lot less intimidating than you think.

The Process: Step by Step

1

Drop-Off and Intake

When you walk in, we'll have a quick conversation about what's going on with your computer. We'll ask questions like: When did the problem start? What symptoms are you seeing? Has anything changed recently (new software, a power surge, a drop)?

We'll fill out an intake form with your contact information, the device details, and a description of the issue. You'll also provide your login password if applicable, so we can actually test the machine.

2

Diagnostic

This is where we figure out what's actually wrong. We run a series of hardware and software tests, check for malware, inspect components, and narrow down the root cause. This is important โ€” fixing the symptom without understanding the cause leads to the problem coming right back.

At PC Medics of NJ, our diagnostic fee is $59.99, due at drop-off. If you proceed with the repair, this fee is included in the repair cost (you're not paying twice).

3

We Call You with the Results

Once the diagnostic is complete, we'll call you to explain what we found โ€” in plain English, not tech jargon. We'll tell you:

You decide whether to proceed. There's no pressure and no upselling. If you decide not to repair, you only owe the diagnostic fee.

4

The Repair

If you give us the green light, we get to work. Depending on the issue, repairs can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days. If we need to order parts, we'll let you know the timeline. Most standard repairs (virus removal, operating system reinstall, drive replacement) are completed within 24-48 hours.

5

Quality Check and Pick-Up

Before we call you to pick up your machine, we run a final round of testing to make sure everything is working properly. When you pick it up, we'll walk you through what we did and give you any recommendations for preventing the issue in the future.

What Does Computer Repair Cost?

One of the biggest concerns people have is cost. We get it โ€” nobody wants a surprise bill. Here's a transparent look at our pricing:
