A computer that won't turn on feels like the worst-case scenario, but at our bench in Haddonfield it's one of the most common problems we see — and often one of the cheapest to fix. The trick is diagnosing it in the right order, because "won't turn on" can mean anything from a dead outlet to a failed motherboard.

This guide walks through the same elimination process we use in the shop, starting with the simple stuff. Work through it in order — most no-power problems get solved in the first two or three steps.

1 First, Define "Won't Turn On"

Before touching anything, watch and listen when you press the power button. The symptom tells you where to look:

2 Rule Out the Outlet and Cables

We're not being condescending — a meaningful share of "dead computers" that come through our door turn out to be a dead power strip, a tripped breaker, or a cable that worked loose. Check these before assuming the worst:

Quick test: Flip the switch on the back of a desktop power supply off and on (it's marked 0 and 1). Some power supplies latch into a protective state after a power flicker, and cycling that switch — or unplugging for 30 seconds — resets them.

3 Desktops: Power Supply Checks

If the outlet and cable check out and a desktop is still completely dead, the power supply (PSU) is the number one suspect. It's the component that fails most often in desktops because it takes the brunt of every surge and brownout.

Signs that point to the PSU:

Also press and hold the power button for 20 seconds with the machine unplugged — this drains residual charge and clears some stuck states. Then reconnect and try again. If the front power button itself feels mushy or stuck, that tiny switch can also be the whole problem; it's a simple repair.

Confirming a dead PSU properly requires a tester or a known-good spare, which is exactly the kind of thing a shop does in minutes. 4 Laptops: Battery and Charger Checks

Laptops add two more links to the power chain: the charger and the battery. Test them like this:

5 Powers On but No Display

If fans spin and lights come on but the screen stays black, the machine may actually be booting blind. Try these:

6 Motherboard and Deeper Failures

If you've ruled out the outlet, cables, power supply or charger, battery, and display, what's left is the motherboard or something soldered to it. Common causes we see include failed power circuitry after a storm surge, liquid damage that took days to show symptoms, and swollen capacitors on older boards.

This is the point where home troubleshooting should stop. Motherboard-level diagnosis requires equipment and experience, and the repair-or-replace math depends on the machine's age and what your data is worth. Protect your data first: Whatever you do, don't keep flipping the power on and off over and over, and never open a power supply — the capacitors inside hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged. If the machine suffered a surge, a drop, or a spill, repeated power attempts can turn a recoverable drive into a data-loss situation. Your files are almost always recoverable from a machine that won't power on — as long as the drive isn't damaged further in the meantime.
